Fyraftenstol
After becoming educated in the extensive history of the acclaimed Danish furniture tradition and visiting dozens of sites, factories and spaces exhibiting the rich tradition throughout Finland, Sweden and Denmark, participants were tasked with designing and building an original chair. The final product was restricted to dimensions of 80cm x 80cm x 80cm or less, must be created out of solid wood and use less than an allotted amount of wood, conditions which forced aspects of sustainability and efficient resource use to be heavily considered, as tradition entails.
Roughly translated, ‘the after-work chair’ is a deck chair inspired by the classic Northeast Adirondack chair recreated in an modern Danish style, constructed with Finnish Maple and finished with a Danish soap wash.
Fyraftenstol features 16 identically dimensioned slats, the infamously comfortable 104° seat angle, and a backrest that sits 5mm in front of the back support allowing the shape of the user’s back to form the shape of the chair.
In order to allow the backrest it’s offset from the top stringer, dowels were split and wedged between the bottom stringer and the slats, the pressure fit allowing much more elasticity than a glue alternative.
