Trunk Shade

Inspired by the lack of uniformity found in a tree trunk, the Trunk Shade is a digitally fabricated design solution aimed at minimizing resource use, through all stages of production, without compromising function or aesthetic.

Using a single 8.5’’x11’’ sheet of paper, and one 24’’x36’’x1/8’’ sheet of wood, the shade is well in pursuit of optimizing resource efficiency and transportability while maintaining style.

In order to provide uniqueness to each iteration - in the same way no two tree trunks are identical - the shape of lamp exterior was pulled from a parametric design algorithm created with Grasshopper in which a randomly generated surface is split 21 times, each section then used as a vertical member in the shade. The vertical members are slotted into a series of plates that allow for multiple configurations with the same materials as well as the ability to pack flat and be transported with ease.
